Professor Tyerman has been for the last decades the most authoritative figure in the history of the Crusades and in my own mapmaking endeavours. His astonishing 1000 page work "God's War" inaugurated a complete overhaul of the traditional thinking about the Crusades. The new assessment, with nearly universal scholarly approval, argues that Christian Holy wars were NOT ground-shaking barbaric incursions into peaceful Muslim world. Rather, they were just another means of medieval ideological warfare, quickly becoming part of the already violent Middle Eastern puzzle.
