𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐞-𝐁𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 (𝐏𝐁𝐒) is an aqueous salt solution widely used in research and laboratory applications. This non-toxic buffer supplies cells with water and essential inorganic ions required for normal metabolism. It is also commonly used for rinsing, dilution, and as a reference solution.

Celebrated every year on 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟎, this day was established by UNESCO in 2001 to highlight the crucial role of science in building a better world. It draws attention to how science contributes to peace, poverty reduction, sustainable development, and global cooperation.

The day reminds us that scientific progress is not only about discoveries in laboratories — it is also about ensuring that knowledge is shared, applied responsibly, and used to address humanity’s greatest challenges. From climate change to public health, World Science Day is a call for dialogue between scientists, policymakers, and citizens, making science more accessible and trusted by society.

𝟔.𝟎𝟐 × 𝟏𝟎²³ is the number of atoms, molecules, or ions in one mole of a substance. This number is known as the 𝐀𝐯𝐨𝐠𝐚𝐝𝐫𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭, named after the Italian scientist Amedeo Avogadro, who proposed that equal volumes of gases under the same conditions of temperature and pressure contain equal numbers of molecules.

On 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟑, chemists and biochemists celebrate 𝐌𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲 to highlight the importance of Avogadro’s discovery in the calculation and definition of the mole — the standard unit for measuring the amount of a substance.

Today, at the start of European Biotech Week 2025 (September 29 - October 6), we celebrate 𝟓𝟎 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐚 (biotechweek.org).

The opening of the first enzyme factory in Vilnius in 1971 led to the establishment of the Institute of Applied Enzymology in 1975 - a milestone that marked the true beginning of Lithuania’s biotechnology industry.

Since then, Lithuania has made remarkable progress, becoming a true life sciences hub. Today, more than 400 companies are active in the biotechnology sector, making it one of the country’s fastest-growing and most productive economic fields (source: lithuania.lt).

It’s no surprise that Lithuania is increasingly chosen as a host for international scientific events: this year, the prestigious EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organisation) Young Scientist Forum took place in Vilnius on September 24-26, highlighting Lithuania’s growing role in European science.
