✝️ CAN A PRIEST HEAR YOUR CONFESSION THROUGH A PHONE CALL? 😳🤔

Imagine you are far away from your parish.

You have committed a serious sin and desperately want to go to Confession.

Then you think:

“Why don’t I just call my priest and confess over the phone?”

It sounds convenient.

But can a priest actually give you sacramental absolution over a phone call?

No.

The Catholic Church does not consider a phone call, text message, video call, or online chat a valid way to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Why?

Because Confession is not simply telling a priest your sins and hearing some comforting words.

It is a sacrament.

The penitent must personally approach the minister, confess their sins, express contrition, and receive sacramental absolution from the priest.

There is also an important practical reason:

The priest must be able to establish with certainty who is receiving the sacrament and protect the integrity and confidentiality of the confession.

So even if the priest knows your voice, recognizes your phone number, or sees you on a video call, the sacrament cannot simply be moved online.

And what if you are far from a priest?

You can still turn to God immediately.

Make an act of perfect contrition, sincerely repent, ask God for forgiveness, and resolve to go to Confession as soon as reasonably possible.

But remember:

Perfect contrition does not turn a phone call into Confession.

The sacrament still requires sacramental confession and absolution according to the Church’s norms.

So next time someone says:

“Confession can be done over the phone because the priest can hear you…”

Remember:

Confession is not just about being heard.

It is a sacrament.
