Livestock Disease Outbreak and Emergency Vaccination Response in Hloahloeng, Mohale’s Hoek

While the country is still battling an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in livestock, there has been a new emergence of another disease locally known as “lefu la Hlooana.”

This disease is characterized by symptoms such as extreme fatigue, loss of appetite, and prolonged recumbency (animals lying down for extended periods). As the disease progresses toward death, affected animals develop foams in the mouth. The disease is highly dangerous, as it leads to significant livestock mortality.

Initially, it appeared to affect donkeys and horses; however, it has now spread to all types of livestock. The outbreak has severely impacted the Mohale’s Hoek district, particularly in the Hloahloeng constituency, which is one of the eight areas where the DPE operates.

The community in Hloahloeng is reported to be highly concerned about the outbreak. Members of the public are therefore urged to remain vigilant, take necessary precautions, and promptly report any suspected symptoms to their local district livestock officer or extension worker.
