Yesterday- 3rd October 2024- marked a long-awaited milestone symbolising significant strides towards improving essential medicines access towards improved health outcomes and positive impact on epidemic control through use of innovative technology in Lesotho – BonoloMeds program. The Honourable Minister of Health (Mr. Selibe Mochoboroane), USAID & UNAIDS Country Representatives, MOH and Right To Care Lesotho teams had a vibrant tour of BonoloMeds implementation sites in Maseru to appreciate BonoloMeds processes.
This innovation means patients from public health facilities can access essential medicines from their preferred pick-up-points such as elockers. BonoloMeds is aimed at transforming the health care landscape in the context of Decentralised Drug Distribution.
During today’s event, the Honourable Minister informed Basotho about the BonoloMeds program, a key initiative that marks an important milestone in the Ministry of Health’s mission of ensuring convenient and equitable healthcare for all Basotho. The Honourable Minister’s tour began at Qoaling Filter Clinic representing the first point of contact for patient enrolment into BonoloMeds, where the Minister was the mock patient. The tour proceeded to the Central Dispensing Unit (CDU) where the packaging medicine parcels is dispensed and dispatched to the patient preferred pick-up-point. Having appreciated the CDU processes, the Honourable Minister and crew, continued to Maseru Mall BonoloMeds elocker where the day’s mock patient, the Honourable Minister Mochoboroane collected his medicine parcel.
To close this memorable day, the Honourable Minister encouraged Basotho residing in Maseru, Mafeteng and Mohale’s Hoek where the BonoloMeds program is currently being implemented to join the program at their nearest engaged public health facilities. He stated that the program will be expanding to Thaba-Tseka. He further indicated that the BonoloMeds program distributes medicines for chronic use such as ART, hypertension, diabetes, psychiatric and family planning commodities as well as PrEP.
The Honourable Minister expressed gratitude to PEPFAR/USAID for their financial support, and Right To Care Lesotho as BonoloMeds program implementing partner. He appreciated the partnership in the delivery of the program towards reaching Sustainable Development Goals, #3: Good Health and Well-being as well as 95- 95- 95 UNAIDS targets
