Cinnamon Bentota Beach – Architecture by Geoffrey BawaCinnamon Bentota Beach, originally designed in 1967, is one of the most celebrated works of Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, a pioneer of Tropical Modernism. The hotel reflects Bawa’s philosophy of blending architecture with nature. Inspired by traditional Sri Lankan courtyard houses and colonial Dutch influences, the design features open-air corridors, shaded verandas, internal courtyards, and terracotta-tiled roofs.The building is arranged around a central courtyard that enhances natural ventilation and daylight, reducing the need for artificial cooling. White walls contrast with dark timber details, while local materials such as clay tiles and stone create harmony with the tropical surroundings. Carefully framed views connect the Indian Ocean on one side and the Bentota River on the other, making the landscape an integral part of the architecture.Bawa’s design emphasizes simplicity, symmetry, and a seamless indoor-outdoor relationship, creating a tranquil resort atmosphere that feels both modern and deeply rooted in Sri Lankan heritage.
