These slides show the early style dash style that I utilise in pre 2007 Defenders. It’s obviously not a radical departure. In fact, it’s really just a case of replacing the plastic parts. The plastic binnacle is replaced with a metal version and the gauges with smiths or stack. The head unit is replaced with the Bluetooth music system which simply pairs to the driver’s phone upon entry. New speakers, amplifier and subwoofer improve the sound dramatically. In Series vehicles, I prefer the simple Bluetooth speaker as the dash doesn’t have to be cut and additional wiring installed. However in cars that have a hard wired stereo, it makes sense to use that infrastructure. With the removal of the head unit, the dash can be cleaned up with the installation of the walnut shelf. The plastic vent cover is removed, the backing plate painted as per the binnacle and honeycomb mesh fitted to the vent openings. These simple changes yield a cleaner and more functional dash with no plastic components.
