ඉංග්‍රීසි පෙට්ටියේ පූර්වජයා

කලින් කතා කරපු ඉංග්‍රීසි පෙට්ටියට ඒ නම ලැබෙන්න ඇත්තේ කොහොමද කියල හොයනකොට තේරුණු දෙයක් තමයි මේ ඉංග්‍රීසි පෙට්ටිය කියල හඳුන්වපු ජල මුද්‍රිත වැසිකිළි පද්ධතිය මූලිකවම නිර්මාණය කරල තියෙන්නෙ එංගලන්තයේ රජ මාළිගාවල ඒ කාලේ භාවිතා වුණු වැසිකිලි ආකෘතියකට අනුව කියන එක අපේ රටට එක්දහස්නමසිය හැටේ දශකයේ ආවත්, මේ මුල්කාලීන මුද්‍රිත පද්ධති එංගලන්තය භාවිතා වෙලා තියෙන්නේ 1596 විතර කාලයේ. නූතන පෝසිලේන් කොමෝඩ් වැසිකිලියකට ගොඩක් සමීප කම් දක්වන මේ වැසිකිලිය 1558 සිට 1603 බ්‍රිතාන්‍යයේ රැජිනිය වූ පළවෙනි එළිසබෙත් රැජිණගේ රාජකීය යහන් ගබඩාවට යාබදව ඉදි කෙරුණා. මෙය මුලින්ම නිපදවෙන කොට රැජිණ වයස්ගතව සිටීම නිසා ඇයට පහසුවක් ලෙසට මෙය නිර්මාණය වුණා කියලා උපකල්පනය කරන්න පුළුවන්. කොහොමහරි 1600 වගේ වෙනකොට බ්‍රිතාන්‍යයේ අභ්‍යන්තර අපජලය බැහැර කරන නල පද්ධතින් ඉදි වෙන්න පටන් ගත්තා. ඒ වෙනකොට බොහෝමයක් මාලිගාවල පෞද්ගලික වැසිකිළි පහසුකම් දක්නට ලැබුණා. හැබැයි මේ වැසිකිලි වල අප ජලය බැහැර කළේ නම් මාලිගාව වටා ආරක්ෂාවට තිබුණු දිය අගලට කියලයි දැක්වෙන්නේ.

During his voyage back home, the English sailor Robert Knox who was a captive in then Ceylon in the late 17th century wrote a book titled ‘An historical relation of the Island of Ceylon’. In this book, Knox states that our ancestors practiced very hygienic habits. However, our ancestors practiced a high level of hygiene centuries before the period of Robert Knox's stay on the island. A simple exploration of the ruins of our ancient kingdoms gives a wealth of evidence that proves this.

To date, we can witness such ruins in Abayagiriya and Thapowanaya monasteries of the Anuradhapura era; the very first recorded Kingdom of Sri Lanka as well as the ruins of the Royal Palace of Paduwasnuwara. Also, there are ancient exhibits belonging to different eras of Sri Lanka proving that during our history, our ancient ancestors developed very advanced toilet systems. These systems were made with innovative water-sealed technology while using wood ash, coal or soil for purifying waste water.
