Exam focus

The IELTS exam is an international test of English. Many people take the exam because they want to study at an English-speaking university, or because they want to move to Australia, New Zealand, Canada, or the UK. The exam tests your listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

You take the Listening, Reading, and Writing exams on the same day. That takes two and a half hours. The Speaking test may be on the same day, or it may be a few days before or after the other tests.

How do they score on the IELTS exam?

Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking each have a score from 0 to 9. You add these together, then divide by 4 to get the final score. For example:

Listening 3 + Reading 4 + Writing 3 + Speaking 4 = 14

14/4 = 3.5

Your final IELTS score is 3.5

Elementary (A2) students usually score from 3.0 to 4.0, and intermediate (B1) students from 4.0 to 5.0. Most English-speaking universities ask for a score of 6.0 to 7.0 or better.

What do you do in the Speaking test?

The Speaking test lasts 11–14 minutes and is in three parts:

In Part 1 (4–5 minutes) you answer general questions about your life, your family, and other familiar topics.

In Part 2 (3–4 minutes) you get a topic to talk about. You have one minute to prepare, then you talk for up to two minutes.

In Part 3 (4–5 minutes) you have a discussion about the topic you talked about in Part 2.

How do they score on the Speaking test?

The examiner uses these four things to check that your speaking is easy to understand:

Fluency and coherence: you need to talk without stopping too much, and you need to link your ideas together clearly.

Lexical resource: this is vocabulary. You need to use lots of different words and phrases.

Pronunciation: you need to say words clearly.

Grammatical range and accuracy: you need to be able to use grammar correctly.

Speaking Part 1

In Part 1, the examiner asks you questions on familiar topics that you can answer from your personal experience. Here are some common Part 1 topic:

Your job or studies

Your home, hometown, and neighborhood

Your family and friends

Your daily routine

Free time and going out

Food

Art and music

Shopping

Reading

The transport you use

Clothes

The news

You won't get a good score if you give very short answers to questions. Try to expand your answer with reasons, explanations, examples, or details so you can show the examiner your English ability. Let's see how you will expand an answer.

2. පාඨමාලාව අවසානයේ ජාත්‍යන්තරව පිළිගන්නා සහතික පත්‍රයක් ලබා දීම.

3. මෙම පාඨමාලාව නිර්මාණය කර ඇත්තේ ඔබට ඔබගේ රැකියා කටයුතු හා අධ්‍යාපන කටයුතු කරගෙන යන අතරතුර ඒවාට ද බාධාවක් නොවන අයුරෙන් ඔබට ඔබගේ ඉංග්‍රීසි භාෂා ප්‍රවීණත්වය සීග්‍රයෙන් වැඩිදියුණු කරගැනීම සදහායි.
(ඒ සදහා මෙම පාඨමාලාව විද්‍යාත්මක හා ඉතාමත් ප්‍රායෝගික අයුරින් අන්තර්ජාතිකව පිළිගත් ක්‍රමවේදයන් උපයෝගීකරගෙන නිර්මාණය කර ඇත.)

4. ඔබගේ භාෂා හැසිරවීමේ හැකියාව වඩාත් ඔප් නැංවීම සඳහා දිනපතා පැය 24 පුරාවටම ඔබට පහසු වේලාවක විදේශිකයන් සමග ඉංග්‍රීසි භාෂාවෙන් කථා කිරීම සඳහා ක්‍රමවේදයක් හඳුන්වා දීම.

5. මෙම පාඨමාලාවේ ඉගැන්වීම් කටයුතු සිදුකරනු ලබන්නේ, ප්‍රායෝගිකව දිනපතා ජාත්‍යන්තර මාර්ගෝපදේශ අධ්‍යනය කරන සහ භාවිතා කරන මේ වන විට එංගලන්තයේ ජීවත් වන වෛද්‍යවරයකු විසින් වීම.

6. පහත සඳහන්, අප පාඨමාලාවට සහභාගි වී ඉංග්‍රීසි භාෂා සිහිනය සැබෑ කරගත් ශිෂ්‍ය ශිෂ්‍යයාවන්ගේ වීඩියෝ මගින් ද සාක්ෂි සහිතව මෙම පාඨමාලාවේ සාර්ථකත්වය ඔප්පු කර පෙන්වා ඇති අතර, මේ වන විටත් ඔවුන් ඉංග්‍රීසි මාධ්‍යයෙන් විවිධ ක්ෂේත්‍ර වල නිරත වෙමින් සිටින බව ඉතාමත් සතුටින් දන්වා සිටිමු.
