📊 Income inequality: a key concern for Sri Lankans
President Dissanayake's mention of equitable wealth distribution in his 21 November speech aligns with public sentiment
• 96% of Sri Lankans saw the income gap between the rich and poor as a “big problem.”
• This view cuts across all demographics, including age, gender, ethnicity, and income. However, SLOTS data shows Ranil Wickremesinghe voters were less likely to see it as a problem, while AKD voters were more concerned than Sajith Premadasa supporters.
• 92% believed the income gap has widened in the past 10 years, with 94% considering this a negative trend.
• Two-thirds (65%) thought the government should do “a lot more” to reduce inequality, while only 10% believed no action is needed.
