Hiking to Nuwaragla, Sri Lanka.

Nuwara Gala, once the kingdom of Saddatissa, brother of King Dutugemunu, still boasts of ruins of an old castle and a rock pool built on top of the mountain. It is believed that Saddhatissa who was hiding from his brother lived in Nuwara Gala until the death of King Dutugemunu.

Nuwaragala, with its history is important as a remnant mountain which had stood over 600m in height in its day, now after years of erosion stands over 300 meters high. It belongs to the Gal Oya mountain range. This area is associated with the native people or aborigines of Sri Lanka. It is said that an ancient group of people lived in the jungle called Heethala Vanni within this mountain range.
