I stood on that stage with a heart full of gratitude and deep humility.

To be saluted in my home, my birth country of Dominica, the “Land of di Bouyon,” on International Women’s Day was profoundly meaningful. There was something powerful about being celebrated on your own soil.

I thank Bpw Dominica "Business and Professional Women Dominica," for that salute and for the work you continue to do to uplift women and communities across our region.
But my journey did not begin there.

As a child, I battled cancer. In the wake of that experience, there were days when survival and the ability to excel were the only goals. Those moments forced me to develop a strength I did not know I possessed. They taught me resilience, gratitude, and the importance of purpose.

That chapter of my life shaped how I see the world today. It showed me that life itself is a gift, and with that gift comes responsibility, the responsibility to give, to serve, and to create impact wherever we can. This was my first lesson in giving.

Years earlier, in 2017, when I received the Esteemed Volunteer Award in Saint Lucia, I understood something even deeper: giving is never a loss. We give to gain. When we give intentionally, we gain purpose. When we empower others, we strengthen ourselves. When we lift one woman, we elevate generations.

Just like in the bouyon rhythm of Trilla G’s “Congratulations,” we must give thanks for those grand occasions as we remain on our way forward, unshaken, ready to rise. And like the heart of Signal Band’s “Ani Ba Yo Love,” we must carry love within us, because love gives strength, and strength gives life.

My message to every woman is simple: do not allow your challenges to define you or to pen the narrative that shapes the rest of your life. Your struggle is a chapter, not your conclusion.

Extend the gift of giving to yourself. Pour into yourself. Take advantage of the opportunities and spaces granted to you. And when challenges present themselves, make the shift, a mindset shift. Get unstuck. Keep moving. Do not settle. Do not allow anything to create a damper on your life.

We are chasing greatness.

That night, I stood not just for myself, but for every woman who chooses to rise, to serve, to give, and to live boldly.

Because when we give, we gain.

Your thoughts are not accidents. They are not random visitors that show up uninvited and take control of your life. The truth is powerful; you create your thoughts.

Every negative spiral begins with a single thought that was entertained a little too long. When you give space to doubt, fear, or insecurity, they expand. They build stories. They create worst-case scenarios that feel real, even when they’re not.

If you can create negative thoughts, you can just as intentionally create positive ones.
