💰 The United Nations Development Programme and the Government of Japan are providing $3 million to help Kazakhstan address the shrinking of the Caspian Sea.
🌊 The initiative aims to improve water governance, strengthen environmental monitoring, and enhance regional cooperation among Caspian states.
⚠️ Experts warn that the Caspian Sea is rapidly declining due to climate change, rising temperatures, increased evaporation, and reduced river inflows, posing serious risks to biodiversity, fisheries, and local livelihoods.
🔬 Kazakhstan will expand scientific monitoring in the northern Caspian and improve data sharing with neighboring countries. The project also supports evidence-based policies for long-term sustainable water management and is implemented with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.

Logistics remains a key driver of economic cooperation within the EAEU, with cargo transportation exceeding 2.5 billion tonnes since the start of the year. To streamline cross-border trade, member states are introducing digital customs solutions. Kazakhstan’s KEDEN system and Russia’s new SPOT platform, launching on June 1, are expected to simplify cargo verification and speed up the movement of goods across the common market.
At the same time, growing geopolitical uncertainty has increased the importance of alternative overland trade routes. Experts highlight Kazakhstan’s Middle Corridor as a secure option for international transit. Further development of the route, including expanding the capacities of the ports of Aktau and Kuryk and reducing transaction costs, could strengthen trade links and support economic growth across the EAEU.
