The DoE welcomes experienced Caymanian, Sabrina Douglas, who joins our team! The new Assistant GIS and Field Support Officer will provide Geographical Information System (GIS) expertise, data management, and project support.
Ms. Douglas will be supporting various aspects of the Department of Environment’s ongoing natural resources research, monitoring, and conservation work for both terrestrial and marine field studies on all three islands. In addition, she will be working with the development and maintenance of the DoE’s digital GIS infrastructure and related database management including assistance in implementing the department’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) work.
With a Master’s degree in Marine Resource Development and Protection, training in GIS, and at least 4 years of GIS fieldwork experience locally and in Scotland, Ms. Douglas said that the GIS aspect of the role drew her to the position.
She said, “It is important to map our national resources so that we have an accurate picture of our critical habitats to protect endangered species. Mapping of national resources can also include public moorings for communal use, our shorelines to identify environmental impacts such as beach loss, or, to secure the locations of national peat reserves which act as carbon storage for the Cayman Islands”.
Fortunately, she loves working in the field and has been getting her Vitamin D while supporting other areas of the department.
