How to Think Like a Luxury Interior Designer (Lesson Eight)

In this lesson, we're focusing on materiality, because at this level of design, material selection goes far beyond appearance. Every surface is considered for how it will look, feel, age, and relate to everything around it.

Most people choose materials in isolation. We think about them as a composition.

Rather than applying a single finish throughout a space, we layer, timber, stone, metal, glass, linen, textured weaves, to build contrast, warmth, and depth that no single material could achieve alone.

The question we're always asking is:
"What does this space feel like when someone is standing inside it?"

That's why the interiors we design feel considered and rich without relying on decoration to do the heavy lifting.

The interest is already in the materials, the grain of the timber, the texture of natural stone, the give of a quality upholstery, the understated sheen of a metal edge detail.

Materiality also governs visual balance. Smooth sits beside textured. Warm is anchored by cool. Weight is softened with lightness.

Because great architecture is never just about colour or furniture. It's about engineering a layered sensory experience, where every material earns its place, and the space holds its quality not just on the day it's finished, but for years after.
