QA vs QC in Construction Many People Mix Them Up

On site, I’ve noticed something when there’s a defect, everyone shouts “QC failed”
But in reality QA and QC are not the same thing.

Let’s break it down
Quality Assurance (QA) – Before the work

QA is planning and prevention.
It answers the question: “How do we ensure the work will be done right?”

Site examples:

Preparing the Method Statement before concreting

Approving mix design before casting

Tool box talks on workmanship standards

Inspection Test Plans (ITP)

👉 QA = Process-focused
👉 QA prevents mistakes before they happen

Quality Control (QC) During & after the work

QC is inspection and verification.
It answers: “Was the work done according to spec?”

Site examples

Slump test before pouring concrete

Cube casting and strength testing

Checking rebar spacing and cover

Measuring formwork dimensions before casting

👉 QC = Product-focused
👉 QC detects defects after or during ex*****on

A short site story 👷🏽‍♂️

On one project, concrete cubes failed at 28 days.
Everyone blamed QC.

But when we reviewed properly:

No approved method statement ❌

Mix design wasn’t reviewed ❌

Poor supervision during batching ❌

QC did the tests correctly — QA was weak.

That day, I learned something important:

QC catches errors. QA prevents them.
If QA is strong, QC becomes easier.

Simple way to remember:

QA = “Are we doing the right things?”

QC = “Did we do them right?”

Both are equally important.
One without the other leads to rework, delays, and disputes.

On site, quality is not an accident it’s a system.
