After watching the Toxic Harvest documentary, I couldn’t help but recall a short video we produced at PCPB on how sprayers can protect themselves when handling agrochemicals.

Having visited numerous farms across the country, I can say with certainty, the documentary only scratches the surface. There’s a significant information gap regarding pesticide safety. Ask most farmers what the blue, green, yellow, or red labels on chemical packaging mean, and you’ll be met with blank stares. The brand name is often all they care about. Everything else is dismissed as ‘small print’.

It’s time we rethink our approach.

PCPB and other regulators should explore models where licensed Service Provision Enterprises (SPEs) offer professional spray services. This could drastically reduce unsafe, over-the-counter pesticide handling and promote proper chemical stewardship on our farms.

Farmers deserve better. They deserve protection.

Earlier this year, we had the opportunity to produce a video for the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Kenya in partnership with Kenya Flower Council, showcasing how the sector is balancing growth and sustainability for long-term success.

I couldn't help but admire how the stakeholders are committed to set guidelines. It isn't just a sector success, but a blueprint on what other sectors can learn from.

Imagine a manufacturing sector with the same level of traceability, A livestock value chain embracing circular economy practices. Envision tourism anchored in environmental restoration.
The lessons are right here, blooming before our eyes. What's holding us back?
