About The Licenses - Creative Commons 07/02/2014

Know you Creative Commons Licences:

Why do you need a licence?

As an author of a creative work you may wish to permit certain use of your copyright works based on your conditions to such use. Based on these, you can then clearly indicate how people can use your work.

You will start by considering the types of conditions you would like attached to your work.
The four conditions are:
BY- Attribution: Where a work is copied, redistributed or remixed under CC Credit (attribution) must be given to the original author in the way they request.

SA- Share Alike: Allows copying, distribution, display and performance or modification of derivative works only under the same license conditions governing the original work.

ND- Non Derivative works: Allows copying, distribution, display and performance only of original copies of author’s work. For modification author’s permission is required first.

NC- Non Commercial: Allows copying, distribution, display and performance of the work only for Non-Commercial purposes unless permission is requested first.

The following six licences are then available to use under CC:

1. Attribution (BY) – this allows copying, distribution, remix, tweaking and building upon the work. However, it is important that credit is given to the original author.

2. Attribution Non-Commercial (BY-NC) – allows copying, distribution, remix, tweaking and building upon the work as long as it is not for a commercial purpose and must credit the original author.

3. Attribution Share Alike (BY-SA) – this allows remixing, tweaking and building on it (including commercial use) whilst crediting original author and licensing any derivative works under the same terms.

4. Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike(BY-NC-SA) – other can use provided it is for non-commercial purposes, credits the original author and licenses any new creations under identical terms.

5. Attribution No Derivative works (BY-ND) - allows the work to be utilized in its current form for both commercial and non-commercial purposes provided it remains unchanged, not used for derivative works and credit is given to the original author.

6. Attribution Non- Commercial No Derivative works (BY-NC-ND) – This is the most restrictive license allowing copying and sharing of works only in original form for non-commercial purposes and credit should be provided to the original author.
