Politically, Rigathi Gachagua may not have lost despite the court upholding his impeachment. In fact, the legal and political battles ahead could strengthen rather than weaken his influence in Mount Kenya politics.

First, he has not exhausted all available legal avenues. As long as the matter remains active in the courts, he continues to occupy public attention and can frame himself as a victim of political persecution. This narrative has historically resonated with many voters who feel their region or leaders have been unfairly targeted.

Second, the prolonged legal process allows Gachagua to consolidate his position as the de facto political kingpin of the Mount Kenya region. Every court appearance keeps him relevant and provides an opportunity to mobilize public sympathy and political support.

For President Ruto, this presents a significant political challenge. The longer the dispute persists, the more difficult it becomes to maintain a united political base in Mount Kenya. If Gachagua succeeds in positioning himself as the region's chief political spokesman, he could influence a substantial number of MPs, governors, senators, and MCAs.

Whether or not Gachagua ultimately contests the presidency, his influence could translate into a sizeable parliamentary bloc. Such a bloc would have the capacity to shape legislation, frustrate government agendas, and emerge as a decisive force in coalition-building.

In many ways, Gachagua appears to be borrowing from Raila Odinga's long-tested political strategy: transforming legal and political setbacks into opportunities for mobilization, negotiation, and increased political relevance. Rather than focusing solely on elective office, the objective becomes building a movement that cannot be ignored.

If this strategy succeeds, Gachagua could find himself in a powerful bargaining position after the next general election. Whether as a coalition partner, kingmaker, or negotiator in a post-election arrangement, his political value may be determined less by the offices he holds and more by the votes and leaders he can command.
