Through the Lift One Empower Two program implemented by Solidarity Initiative for Refugees and supported by Global Wholebeing Fund, Jemima turned a small business grant into a growing partnership that now helps her provide food, school uniforms, and stability for her children.

Today, her business is helping her reclaim the ability to rebuild her future.

Eid al-Adha!

Last week, We convened 32 leaders from 16 Refugee-Led and Community-Based Organisations delivering formal and informal education across Kakuma Municipality โ€” ECDE, accelerated learning, social-emotional learning, and life-skills programming for a two-day workshop with the Sub-County Directorate of Education, Turkana West.

For two days, our partners sat across the table from the duty-bearers who hold the keys to formal recognition: the Sub-County Director of ECDE, the Quality Assurance and Standards Officer, and the Public Health Officer. Sessions led by the Directorate gave RLO and CBO leaders practical clarity on:

Kenya's education policy framework and the place of refugee-led education within it

Registration procedures and documentary requirements for ECDE institutions

Governance through Boards of Management

Public health and quality assurance standards

The Shirika Plan envisions a transition from parallel humanitarian education delivery toward integration into government-led systems. As humanitarian funding contracts and responsibility shifts to government, alignment between refugee-led organisations and county priorities is no longer optional, it is the precondition for the sustainability of our programmes and the continuity of education for the children we serve.

SIR is proud to coordinate and facilitate these linkages between government and local organisations, ensuring that refugee voice is present in the rooms where education policy is interpreted and applied, and that our partners' work is anchored in national systems rather than alongside them.

Each of the 16 organisations/institutions left with an action plan. We will walk with them as they take it forward.

Deep gratitude to our partners Cohere and Porticus, and to the Sub-County Directorate of Education, for making this possible.

In partnership with the International Trade Centre , under the Promoting Sustainable Socio-Economic Development and Creating Market-Based Livelihood Opportunities for Refugees and Host Communities project, adolescent girls and young women are gaining more than technical skills theyโ€™re building confidence, earning income, and shifting long-held perceptions about what girls can achieve.

But hereโ€™s what we know: Sustainable change doesnโ€™t happen in isolation.

Thatโ€™s why we brought together 67 parents and community leaders who came together not just to listen, but to reflect, question, and co-create solutions.

Because when communities understand the value of digital work:

โ†’ Girls stay in the program.
โ†’ Families become champions.
โ†’ Change lasts beyond the classroom.

This isnโ€™t just a training program. Itโ€™s a community-led shift in mindset, opportunity, and future pathways.
