There are several ways to curl Subsaharan African hair. One way is to use gel. First, wash your hair with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. For even better results, choose a detangling conditioner—this will make it easier to detangle your hair. Once your hair is clean, comb it with a wide-toothed comb, starting from the ends. Then apply a curl-enhancing gel (a gel made in North Africa is recommended) to your hair and scrunch it with your hands to encourage curls

How to get nice African curly hair.

My favorite shampoo is the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie with coconut & hibiscus, it smells amazing and you only need a small amount to clean your hair, and doesn't leave any residue or strip your natural oils.
After you wash your hair, use a moisturizing conditioner like the Marc Anthony Nourishing Argan Oil of Morocco conditioning treatment to help detangle your hair and add shine. You can also use this on dry hair to smooth out and define your curls, just make sure you don't put too much.
After conditioning, use a leave-in conditioner with heat protection, I usually use different ones depending on my mood but my favorite is Oribe Gold Lust Transformative Masque which you can use as a deep conditioner once in a while if you have really dry hair or like me using it as a leave-in conditioner, it prevents frizz and flyaways whilst protecting from heat damage.
Leave your hair to air dry before using anything else such as gel or curling cream.
I usually only do an afro puff when I'm not going anywhere important because it's so quick to do but if I'm going out then I blow dry my hair with a diffuser. If you don't want to blow dry then leave it at this step and style how you like.
