Architect 962

Understanding the architecture of occupation in Palestine means acknowledging the ways that space, infrastructure, and planning policies impact lives, restrict freedoms, and drive resilience. It is a reminder of the power that architecture holds to either bind people to place or fragment their connection to it—and the enduring spirit of those who resist through the very spaces they inhabit.
Settlements, bypass roads, checkpoints, and military zones are not merely infrastructural developments. They form a systematic network of physical and psychological barriers that fragment the landscape, restrict movement, and reshape Palestinian spaces. The construction of the Separation Wall is a stark example, cutting through villages, uprooting families, and distancing Palestinians from their homes, livelihoods, and agricultural land.
Urban planning practices, like the zoning laws control where Palestinians can build, live, and work, often denying permits for essential services while enabling the expansion of settlements. This controlled environment amplifies inequality and restricts Palestinians to crowded urban areas while vast stretches of land remain out of reach.
Despite this, Palestinian architecture also tells a story of resilience and adaptability. Communities are developing ways to reclaim spaces and preserve cultural heritage, using architecture to safeguard identity, resist erasure, and build hope for future generations. Community centers, local markets, and repurposed heritage sites serve as spaces for gathering and resistance, where Palestinians sustain and celebrate their culture.
