Patellofemoral pain syndrome is characterized by pain around and behind the kneecap, especially when climbing stairs, going from sit to stand and vice versa or when sitting with the knees bent for a prolonged period of time.

Three factors contribute to this syndrome and they are:

- a muscle imbalance in the quadriceps
- weak gluteal muscles
- overpronation in the foot
