The Channel Islands—including Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, and Sark—have their own unique linguistic heritage! 🇯🇪 🇬🇬

While English is the predominant language spoken across the islands, did you know that the Channel Islands also have their own traditional languages? Jèrriais in Jersey and Guernésiais in Guernsey are regional forms of the Norman language, with roots stretching back to the medieval Duchy of Normandy. Though these languages are spoken by a smaller number of people today, they are an important part of the islands’ cultural identity.

In recent years, there have been efforts to revive and promote these languages, especially in schools and local communities. Additionally, the Channel Islands are home to a diverse population, so you’ll also hear languages like French, Portuguese, Polish, Romanian, Arabic, and Filipino spoken in Jersey, reflecting the island’s vibrant multicultural community.
