There is a stage in insect metamorphosis when the body is no longer what it was and not yet what it will become: inside the casing, the organism dissolves into undifferentiated matter before recomposing itself into a new form. Chrysalis photographs precisely this zone of indeterminacy — and it does so through a device of disarming material simplicity: a black elastic membrane that entirely envelops the figure, and within it a constellation of spheres that deform the anatomy, swell it, push it toward volumes that do not belong to it.
