The ecosystem of the Bagno dell'Acqua lake: an open-air biology laboratory.
Cyanobacteria represent the fundamental biological component of the lake; they are among the most ancient living organisms that in the Proterozoic Aeon (from two and a half billion years to 500 million years ago) have evolved the mechanism of photosynthesis, allowing the passage of the terrestrial climate from an atmosphere poor in oxygen to today's oxygen-rich atmosphere.
Stromatolites are still found with extreme rarity all over the world. Pantelleria is one of the very rare locations in the world with siliceous stromatolites. Other sites of discovery are Yellowstone (Wyoming, USA) and Bahía Concepción (Baja California Sur, Mexico). For these reasons, walking along the coasts of Bagno dell'Acqua or diving into its waters represents a double path in time and space.
