Microalgal biofilm systems show multiple advantages over classical photobioreactors for biotechnological applications, such as lower water requirements and energy consumption. However, the high biomass densities reached at the most mature stages of the biofilm may limit light and nutrient availability. A better understanding of how the metabolic activity of the cells changes in such a different environment is needed to optimise biofilm-based systems for industrial applications.
