The story today is one of redemption, another example of how kitesurfing is a sport can come as a great opportunity in a person's life and be able to make it better.
Surfing came first for Luca Luca Cimino, at a time when business was not going well and he had had to give up his job on the construction site. This was hard work and he was forced to load heavy panels of polystyrene, a material that had first inspired him in his hobby of modeling electric airplanes. And later, after the job failure, they became something more.
Yes, while at home and frustrated for not being able to earn more for himself and for his family, he began to work the first piece of polystyrene and, after several tutorials on the web, he managed to make his first surfboard.
"Well, who will try it now?" he wondered. Nothing to do, no volunteers. Well, he put on his wetsuit and went out to sea. It was November and the feeling of being alone in the water was wonderful. Only him, his survival instinct, and a smile on his face. Since that moment, he now always has a smile every time he enters the sea.
This until one day, after years of paddling and surfing, 'one of those guys with a sail' approached him, who initially annoyed him. This was because they distracted him and a little because he would have liked to try his hand at that sport, as well.
They had told him about an unimaginable feeling of freedom and fulfillment and when the call became stronger he decided to try a friend's kite. With his handyman spirit, which has always distinguished him from others, he decided to inflate the kite on the beach. And after a few videos on Youtube he discovered the first secrets of this sport. Unfortunately, once he launched the kite he deflated, but he had already realized that he liked the sensation of "lift".
He decided to get serious and after various investigations on kites he chose the classic Kaiman 10 advance, which made him feel the adrenaline of very long glides and jumps that he did not imagine possible. Unfortunately, this kite also abandoned him, one day it fell into the waters of Otranto and split in two. However, this earned him the meeting with what would become his instructor and mentor, as well as a great friend, Alex.
Thanks to him he managed to get good results. He became much safer and more competent enough to participate in the "King in the air 2018" competition at Le Dune, the beach of Porto Cesareo. It wasn't the victory he hoped for, but his soul was filled with so many emotions: joy, fear, bitterness and a lot of adrenaline.
Today that missed 1st place has become a stimulus to face each session with more awareness than before, pushing the jumps to the maximum. And the endorphin produced by this sport has become one of those habits that make you feel good and you never want to give up.
Thanks to this sport we met when he gave me his kite for the Far project. A beautiful friendship was born, as often happens in these cases, and I very much hope to be able to see him soon in Lecce and follow his kitesurfing lessons. Yes, because now he has become a teacher.
