Today, before the noise of the day kicks in, it’s worth sitting with the name Martin Luther King Jr. for a moment.

Not as a headline. Not as a quote on a poster.
But as a man who believed, truly believed, that dignity mattered more than comfort, and that love was stronger than fear.

In Italian families, we’re raised on a simple idea: You don’t stay silent when something is wrong.
You speak up at the dinner table.
You defend your people.
You stand your ground, even when your voice shakes.

Dr. King did that for an entire nation.

He talked about justice the way our grandparents talked about family—non-negotiable. Something you don’t abandon when it gets hard. Something you fight for even when it costs you.

He reminded us that courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes it kneels. Sometimes it marches. Sometimes it simply refuses to hate back.

Today isn’t about politics.
It’s about conscience.

It’s about asking ourselves the same quiet question our Nonna might’ve asked after hearing the news: “What kind of person are you choosing to be?”

May we choose decency.
May we choose empathy.
May we choose to leave the table a little bigger than we found it.

That, I think, is how Dr. King would want to be remembered.
