The red dirt of Hormuz Island is surreal in its vibrancy. And any extended walk along the famed Red Beach and surrounding hills all but guarantees that every nook and cranny of anything you may be wearing or carrying is stained in the iron oxide rich crimson hues of this tiny bit of heaven.

This week is of great spiritual & religious significance throughout the Islamic world. It is marked by the two holy days of Tasu’a & Ashura, which commemorate the siege of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, & his subsequent martyrdom along with his supporters at the Battle of Karbala. Ashura is also a major occasion for pilgrimage in Shia Islam. This image is from a re-enactment near the Grand Bazaar in Tehran.
