Border Crackdown and Calm: Ramaphosa Unveils Sweeping Migrant Processing Reforms in National Address
Parliament of the Republic of South Africa
PRETORIA - 07 JUNE 2026 | President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Sunday evening, announcing a drastic overhaul of South Africa’s immigration system alongside a stern warning against rising anti-foreigner vigilantism. Speaking live from the Union Buildings, Ramaphosa laid out an aggressive strategy to curb illegal migration, directly confronting growing public anxiety and escalating social tensions across the country.
Processing Shifts to the Borders
The centerpiece of the President's address was a fundamental structural change to how the country handles asylum seekers and undocumented arrivals. In a major policy shift, the government will execute a phased relocation of all refugee reception centres directly to the country's border posts. The Tshwane centre is slated to be the first to move.
"By processing asylum seekers immediately at their point of entry, we will significantly tighten control over who enters our country and under what criteria," Ramaphosa stated.
The strategy also includes:
• Home Affairs Clean-up: A targeted campaign to root out systemic corruption, bribery, and processing inefficiencies within the Department of Home Affairs.Fast-Tracked Deportations:
• The immediate implementation of streamlined legal mechanisms to accelerate the deportation of undocumented migrants.
A Firm Rejection of Vigilantism
The national address comes amid a surge in anti-foreigner protests and highly publicized social media campaigns. Some activist groups had recently issued a coordinated threat demanding that undocumented migrants leave the country by June 30 or face a nationwide shutdown.
Ramaphosa explicitly dismissed the June 30 deadline and condemned any attempts at citizen-led enforcement. While acknowledging legitimate public frustrations regarding local jobs, healthcare capacity, and municipal resources, the President drew a hard line against lawlessness.
"We cannot allow anger to turn into xenophobic threats or lawless vigilantism," Ramaphosa warned. "Threats of shutdowns and intimidation undermine the very rule of law we are trying to strengthen."
Balancing Enforcement with Ubuntu
Throughout the address, the President maintained that strict border control and human rights are not mutually exclusive. He urged South Africans to reject divisive rhetoric and remember the nation's foundational principles.
"South Africa can fiercely protect its state borders and strictly enforce municipal bylaws, while still upholding human dignity and the values of Ubuntu," Ramaphosa concluded. The newly announced measures are expected to be rolled out immediately, with law enforcement agencies placed on high alert to prevent any unlawful disruptions in the coming weeks.
