Gujarat to Become a Wire-Free State; Cabinet Approves Major Underground Power Line Project
Gandhinagar: In a major move aimed at transforming urban infrastructure and improving city aesthetics, the Gujarat government has approved a large-scale project to gradually shift overhead electricity lines underground across urban areas of the state.
The decision was taken by the Gujarat Cabinet as part of a broader initiative to strengthen urban development and economic growth. Under the project, overhead power cables will be converted into underground networks in all 17 municipal corporations and 151 municipalities across Gujarat.
For the first phase of the project, the state government has sanctioned ₹500 crore.
According to the plan, approximately 14,600 kilometres of high-tension (HT) power lines and 31,400 kilometres of low-tension (LT) power lines will be laid underground in a phased manner.
