हवलदार अजीत सिंह ने स्क्वॉड कमांडर के तौर पर 28 अगस्त 1989 के दिन श्रीलंका में LTTE के विरुद्ध ऑपरेशन में जहां एक और आतंकवादियों पर राकेट लांचर के साथ प्रभावी गोलाबारी की वहीं दूसरी और अपनी जान कि परवाह किये बिना साथियों की जान बचायी।
अभूतपूर्व साहस और वीरता के लिए मरणोपरांत वीरचक्र से सम्मानित।
ऑपरेशन पवन से पहले, वीर राव साहब को उनकी बहादुरी के लिए सेना मेडल से भी नवाज़ा जा चुका था।
