Scientists found a planet made almost entirely of diamonds. It's called 55 Cancri e, orbiting a star just 40 light years from Earth. The planet is twice Earth's size and eight times its mass. Yale University researchers, led by astronomer Nikku Madhusudhan, found that at least a third of its mass could be pure diamond, hidden beneath a graphite surface. Forbes once estimated its value at a staggering $26.9 nonillion — more wealth than exists on Earth.

Imagine a rock worth more than every bank on the planet combined. But there's a catch — newer research questions how much of it is really diamond, and the debate continues. The planet also scorches at nearly 3,900°F, so no one is mining it anytime soon. Some treasures stay forever out of reach.
