Administrative distance (AD) is a metric used by routers to determine the reliability or trustworthiness of a routing protocol when multiple protocols provide routes to the same destination. It is a value that helps the router choose the best route when there are competing routes from different protocols.

In Cisco routers, path selection based on prefix length is part of the routing decision process. When multiple routes to the same destination are available, the router selects the best route using several criteria, with prefix length being a significant one.

Path selection on a Cisco router involves determining the best route for data to travel from one network to another. Cisco routers use several mechanisms to choose the optimal path.

The Path Vector protocol is used by the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) in Cisco networking to exchange routing information between different autonomous systems (ASes). Unlike traditional distance-vector protocols, which rely solely on the distance to a destination, BGP uses a path vector mechanism to maintain a record of the AS path that a route has traversed. This helps to prevent routing loops and provides a means to enforce routing policies.

Link State Routing Protocols work by having routers share information about the state of their links with all other routers in the network. Link State Routing Protocols include OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) and IS-IS (Intermediate System to Intermediate System). They provide scalability and faster convergence compared to Distance Vector protocols, especially in large networks.

DUAL is crucial for EIGRP’s performance, providing a mechanism to ensure loop-free and efficient routing while facilitating quick convergence during network changes. It does this by maintaining a topology table of routes, using feasible distances to determine the best paths, and leveraging backup routes to minimize disruptions.
