We all scream that chorus at gigs, but Bryan Adams has been trolling us since 1984.
In a 2008 interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Adams flat-out said: “It’s not about the year 1969. It’s about making love in the summertime.”
He doubled down years later talking to Songfacts: “The song is autobiographical, but not about 1969. I was 9 years old then. I just liked the sound of ’69. It was the summer I got my first guitar and started a band.”
So that “best days of my life” summer? It’s 3 things at once:
The nostalgia: Getting his first real six-string from the five-and-dime, playing ‘til his fingers bled, dreaming of making it with his garage band.
The coming of age: First love, first heartbreak, that feeling of being young + broke + invincible.
The innuendo: “Me and my baby in a ’69”… yeah, he knew what he was doing there.
The genius is that it works either way. Whether you think it’s about 1969 or about 69, you still feel that bittersweet punch of looking back at your own “best summer.
That’s why 40 years later, every guitarist in the room still knows the riff. Because we’ve ALL had a “summer of ’69” , even if ours was in ’09 or ’19.

A departure from my usual polished posts, but sometimes it’s the unedited moments that shine brightest. This picture from a show at a resort in Lonavla reminded me to keep things real and grounded. I’m sharing it here to mix things up and show you that music isn’t always about grand productions.
What do you think?
Should I share more behind-the-scenes moments like this?
