Today, 22 March, 2024 is celebrated around the world as World Water Day. In 1992, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development saw the first formal proposal of World Water Day under Agenda 21. The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution in December 1992 by which March 22 was declared as World Water Day from 1993 onwards. World Water Day raises awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water and what we can do to tackle the global water crisis. Every year UN-Water, the UN's coordination mechanism on water and sanitation, sets the theme for World Water Day. The theme for 2024 is: "Leveraging Water for Peace". The key takeaway from this theme is: Water can create peace or spark conflict. Tensions in society can arise due to water scarcity or pollution and only cooperation and sustainable use of water can resolve. When we cooperate on water, we create a positive ripple effect, fostering harmony and building resilience to shared challenges. This is required to align with the UN SDG Goal 6 which aims to provide water and sanitation to all by 2030. Let's get working on it.
