30th July World Day Against Trafficking in Persons
For the short while I worked with the survivors of trafficking, that little peek into their lives and how the nexus works so efficiently and diligently left me both sad and baffled. The plight of the survivors especially the minors is painful to even write about, those various stories of torture and violence only diminishes my faith in human beings further. The struggle for justice for these survivors is a long-winded road, a lot of the survivors have lost hope, families, friends and sometimes themselves. The system with all it flaws makes a constant claim of being “victim centric” but the realities on ground usually say a different story. Trafficking in Persons (Prevention, Care, and Rehabilitation) Bill 2021 that makes the National Investigating Agency an investigating agency in these matters and also calls for the applicability of the NIA Act. The Bill also impacts adult s*x workers who are already a vulnerable section, the bill treats the victims of human trafficking on par with adult persons in s*x work. This bill if passed will create havoc at several levels hence Trafficking in Persons (Prevention, Care, and Rehabilitation) Bill 2021.
