"There is a certain amusement going on at the World Trade Organization. The argument is between India and the United States over the local content rules for renewable energy projects. In 2013, U.S brought a complaint before the WTO arguing that the domestic content requirement imposed under India’s national solar program violates the global trading rules. To promote the production of solar energy within the country, the government under the program agrees to enter into long-term power purchase agreements with solar power producers, guaranteeing the sale of the energy produced. However, for a solar power producer to be eligible to participate in the program, is required to use certain domestically sourced inputs. But such local content rules are not allowed. Thus, the shouting match between the two countries."
