Hardware Repair Workshop
The one-day “Basic Household Electronics Repair” workshop was held in the seminar hall of Electronics and Telecommunication Department at Goa College of Engineering on 28th March, 2019. The workshop was organised by the IEEE GEC student branch members Mr Aditya Gaitonde and Mr Sharmad. The objective was to provide the technical expertise required for troubleshooting common hardware problems and creating a general awareness against mismanagement of electronic equipment.
The resource person for this workshop was Ms. Shalakha Kulkarni, a fourth-year GEC student and founder of “SK Design Labs”, a home-based service centre that aims at providing consumer hardware repair solutions. The morning session started at 10 A.M, followed by the evening session from 2:00 P.M to 4:00 P.M with a one-hour lunch break in between. The participants comprised approximately 25-30 students. The event witnessed an overall strong level of interaction between the participants and the resource person.
The following contents were covered in the workshop:
1. Basic hardware repair tools
2. Basic appliances: PC/Laptop, speakers/earphones, LED, switchboard, ceiling fan, AC, mixer grinder.
3. Advanced appliances: Microwave oven, LCD, smartphones.
4. Q/A session
Training procedure:
The training started with a brief introduction of the resource person . This was followed by a brief oral test that aimed at analysing participants’ existing knowledge about the theme and some of the key contents which were to be discussed in the workshop. This was proceeded by the resource person giving a general overview about the workshop and what the participants will learn by highlighting the major topics.
Each main topic was followed by a quiz and a Q/A session in order to gauge the knowledge gained about the topics discussed during the session. It also included a “Jugaad Stories” discussion time in which the participants were asked to provide a narrative about their DIY moments wherein they rendered a hardware component non-functional but eventually managed to fix it.
At the end of the evening session the participants were asked for their feedback in order to know about their views with regard to the day’s event, what they had learnt and what they would like to add as an improvisation for future sessions. A vote of thanks was given by Ms. Twishi Saran (Chairperson of IEEE GEC Student Branch) and a thanksgiving speech by Ms. Shalakha Kulkarni concluded the event.
