आज से ठीक 31 साल पहले, 16 मार्च 1995 को, भारत के एक छोटे से बच्चे को पोलियो की दो बूँदें पिलाई गईं — और उसी पल से शुरू हुआ भारत का सबसे बड़ा सार्वजनिक स्वास्थ्य अभियान। तब से भारत में इस दिन को नेशनल वैक्सीनेशन डे या नेशनल इम्युनाइजेशन डे के रुप में मनाया जाने लगा। यहां से शुरु हुआ अभियान चेचक, पोलियो, नवजात टेटनस, लिम्फेटिक फाइलेरिया, जैसे बीमारियों को जड़ से खत्म किया। हलांकि अभी भी खसरा, टीबी, हेपेटाइटिस-B जैसी बीमारियों से पार पाना बाकी है।
