We Need To Wake Up

WE ARE STARING AT A DOOMS DAY - AND NOT DOING MUCH ABOUT IT

In one of its reports Organization For Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) says;

By 2050, the Earth’s population is expected to increase from 7 billion to over 9 billion. Coupled with expected higher living standards, global GDP is expected to quadruple, with growing demand for energy and natural resources. To feed a growing population with changing dietary preferences, agricultural land is projected to expand globally in the next two decades to match the increase in food demand. Without new policies, global energy demand is projected to increase by 80%, and the energy mix would remain virtually unchanged from today’s with fossil energy still supplying 85%.
Without new green growth policies, continued degradation and erosion of natural environmental capital are expected by 2050, with the risk of irreversible changes that could endanger two centuries of rising living standards. The costs and consequences of inaction are significant, both in economic and human terms.

The OECD Environmental Outlook to 2050 suggests that without more ambitious policies, by 2050: - More disruptive climate change is likely to be locked in, with global GHG emissions projected to increase by 50%. Atmospheric concentrations could reach almost 685 ppm by 2050, resulting in the global average temperature increase of 3 to 6 degree Celsius by the end of the century.

Biodiversity loss is projected to continue globally. The main pressures are land-use change and management (e.g. agriculture, urban sprawl), commercial forestry, infrastructure development, human encroachment and fragmentation of natural habitats, as well as pollution and climate change.
Global water demand is projected to increase by some 55%, due to growing demand from manufacturing (+400%), thermal electricity generation (+140%) and domestic use (+130%). These pressures could imply water shortages that would hinder the growth of many economic activities.

Has anything changed in India regarding rapes and sexual harassment after the dastardly Nirbhaya case in December 2012 ?

Its nearly 7 years since the shocking Nirbhaya incident happened in India. There was an uproar across the nation then. One thought it was one off rare event, and with the rhetoric heard from people in power that adequate steps will be taken to prevent such incidents, such an incident will not repeat. But it is extremely sad to note that, rapes child abuse and sexual harassment has been continuing in our society unabated…..why?

It is important for us as a society to carry out an unbiased introspection to know why we are unable to correct this outrageous anomaly. It seems that the commitment to bring in desired change in our society is not strong enough. We as a society easily forget these incidents and get on with our daily lives, and only wake up when the next horrific incident comes to light, and we go to sleep again.

It will be incorrect to say that nothing has changed. Some acts, rules and regulations have been brought into effect, but compliance to the said provisions are badly wanted. Unless the provisions of the newly enacted rules and regulations are implemented in letter and spirit it will be difficult to bring in desired changes. Corporates have an important role to play in spreading awareness about prevention of sexual harassment. If the provisions of “The Prevention Of Sexual Harassment Of Women at Workplace (prevention, prohibition and redressal) Act 2013” are communicated to the employees in the right spirit, the message is likely to be carried to the family members of those employees and there is a likelihood for this message to spread across.

Medanta Hospitals has been directed to pay Rs. 25 Lakhs as compensation to a Sexual Harassment complainant by the Honourable High Court of Madhya Praedesh. It is a indeed a positive step in the direction of prevention of sexual harassment of women at workplaces in India. This will be a wake up call to all corporates and establishments who are not taking the POSH ACT seriously.

Prevention of sexual harassment is an important step towards women empowerment. Its existence denies women equal opportunity of employment. At the moment, adherence to the POSH ACT is being forced down the throats of corporates and commercial establishments. This should change. It will be more effective if corporates realize that society thrives when women are empowered and hence execute the provisions of POSH ACT in letter and spirit to achieve the desires results. The day when all employers make an endeavour to create a truly safe work environment for women, that is when the much desired change will come.
