Back in 1976, Volvo built the Volvo EC (Elbil), an electric concept car designed for zero-emission urban mobility. Powered by lead-acid batteries, it could reach 70 km/hr and travel around 50 km on a single charge, nearly five decades before EVs became mainstream.

Created in the wake of the oil crisis and growing environmental concerns, the Volvo EC showcased how automakers were already exploring sustainable transportation long before today’s EV revolution.
