What is it like to be a software engineer in India?

A simple answer to this question is, it depends.

All the software companies in India can be divided into 3 broad categories

1.Product Based Companies

2.Service Based Companies

3.Startups

The work culture, compensation and various other things vary depend upon the type of company one belongs to

Product Based Companies:-Prominent MNC’s such as Cisco, Microsoft, Google etc. fall under this category.

Pros:-

The compensation provided by them is quite good and in general reaches the expectations of the employees.They in general receive hikes at regular intervals unless there is a disaster in the company.There is a sense of job security to a great extent.Good name in the society especially necessary when one is getting ready for marriage ;)Good work culture in general. There won’t be too much burden

Cons:-

Lack of work sometimes ( For a fresher ).Slow in any process -> Since they can’t do any mistake you in general cannot take a novel procedure. Always follows already successful methodsSimple things such as peer review and code commit will take days to completeMight be working with older technologies or in-built technologies which is used by no one elseEmployees can become lenient and can forget the art of hacking and learning new things.

2. Service Based Companies :- Also referred to as IT giants companies such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture come under this.

Pros:-

Easier to get in as compared to MNC’s (They hire in bunches)Good knowledge of the field is not required at the beginning. One can come and learn (Many mechanical engineers have become software employees).Can gain work experience which can be helpful to shift to a better company.Job security

Cons:-
