Dahi Handi is a joyful and energetic festival celebrated mainly in Maharashtra and some parts of India as part of Janmashtami, which marks the birth of Lord Krishna.

✨ Meaning & Significance:
• Lord Krishna, in his childhood at Gokul, loved butter and curd (dahi). He used to steal it from pots hung high in houses.
• To protect their butter, villagers began hanging pots (handis) from ceilings or tall poles. Krishna and his friends would form human pyramids to reach and break them.
• This tradition is re-enacted during Janmashtami as Dahi Handi, symbolizing teamwork, courage, and devotion to Krishna.

🎉 How It’s Celebrated:
• A clay pot (handi) filled with curd, butter, ghee, milk, fruits, or sweets is hung high in the air.
• Groups of young men, called Govindas, form large human pyramids to reach and break the handi.
• The team that successfully breaks the handi is rewarded with prizes and honor.
• The event is accompanied by music, dance, and chants of “Govinda Ala Re!”

🌸 Cultural Importance:
• It promotes unity, teamwork, and strength.
• It reflects the playful and loving nature of Lord Krishna.
• In Maharashtra, it is not just a religious festival but also a grand community celebration with competitions and sponsorships.

Shree Krishna Janmashtami — also known as Krishna Jayanti, Gokulashtami, or simply Janmashtami — is the festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu.

Here’s a detailed overview:

Significance
• Spiritual meaning: Lord Krishna’s birth symbolizes the victory of dharma (righteousness) over adharma (evil).
• Historical belief: It is said Krishna was born over 5,000 years ago in Mathura, on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) in the month of Bhadrapada (August–September).
• Purpose of incarnation: To destroy evil forces (like King Kansa) and restore truth, justice, and love in the world.

Legends & Story
• Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva in prison, where they were held by Devaki’s brother Kansa.
• Due to a prophecy that Devaki’s eighth child would kill him, Kansa attempted to kill each child after birth.
• At midnight, when Krishna was born, Vasudeva secretly carried him across the Yamuna River to Gokul and left him in the care of Nanda and Yashoda.
