- Vista Verde -

Vista Verde Retreat is a tropical weekend home nestled within the forested contours of Vythiri, Wayanad. The project is conceived as a quiet intervention in nature, where architecture responds sensitively to land, climate, and existing vegetation rather than imposing upon it.

The structure is elevated on stilts to minimise disturbance to the natural terrain and water flow, allowing the landscape to pass freely beneath the building. This approach preserves the site’s ecological character while creating shaded outdoor zones that enhance thermal comfort and visual connection with the surroundings.

Spatially, the retreat is organised around open verandahs, decks, and permeable edges that dissolve the boundary between indoors and outdoors. Large openings, lightweight roof forms, and deep overhangs are employed to encourage cross ventilation, filter daylight, and protect the interiors from the tropical climate. Living spaces are oriented towards valley views, while private areas remain nestled within the tree canopy, offering both openness and seclusion.

Material choices and detailing remain understated, allowing textures, light, and greenery to define the experience of the space. Landscape and architecture are designed as a continuous system, shaping slow transitions, framed views, and moments of pause throughout the site.

Vista Verde Retreat ultimately becomes a place of retreat in the truest sense — an environment where built form recedes, nature takes precedence, and everyday living unfolds at a slower, more mindful pace.

This interior is conceived as a quiet, grounded living environment where materiality becomes the primary language of design. Warm terracotta-toned surfaces form the backdrop of the space, creating a sense of depth, comfort, and earthiness. Natural stone flooring anchors the interior, offering both visual calm and tactile authenticity, while finely detailed wooden elements introduce warmth and human scale.

The furniture palette is intentionally restrained—soft leather seating, custom-designed pieces, and minimal profiles allow the materials to breathe without visual noise. Each surface is selected not for decoration, but for how it ages, feels, and interacts with light over time. Subtle textures replace ornamentation, reinforcing a timeless design approach rooted in longevity rather than trend.

Natural light plays a critical role in shaping the spatial experience. Filtered through sheer curtains, daylight gently washes across walls and floors, enhancing tonal variation and softening edges throughout the day. Sculptural art pieces and curated décor are placed with intention, adding quiet moments of expression without disturbing the overall calm.

The design philosophy focuses on balance—between solidity and softness, openness and intimacy, function and emotion. The result is an interior that feels composed yet lived-in, refined yet deeply comfortable. Rather than seeking attention, the space invites stillness, offering a serene everyday setting shaped by material honesty, thoughtful detailing, and a deep respect for atmosphere.
