$40 million was paid by CNA Financial, an Insurance Company in USA after it was targeted by a ransomware believed to be of Phoenix Cryptolocker Ransomware family which is closely associated to Evil Corp Gang - Threat Actor which previously attacked and extracted ransom from .

CNA Financial was attacked on 21st March 2021 where over 15,000 devices were encrypted by the ransomware and disrupted their operation.

CVE-2021-28310 - is a Win32k Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability was assigned in February 2021 with the help of Kaspersky & DPAppSecurity Team. The patch was released in April to fix this vulnerability, however, it has come to our knowledge that it is being exploited in the wild by Threat Actors such as .

CVE-2021-28310 is an out-of-bounds (OOB) write vulnerability in dwmcore.dll, which is part of Desktop Window Manager (dwm.exe). Attackers are able to create a situation that allows them to write controlled data at a controlled offset using DirectComposition API.

DirectComposition API is implemented by the win32kbase.sys driver and the names of all related syscalls start with the string “NtDComposition” which can be used by Threat Hunting Team to check for any malicious calls.
