New business opportunities, such as meat goat production, exist to diversify their farm operations and explore alternative enterprises and innovative marketing systems to increase their farm income. Goats are one of the most intelligent, rewarding, and entertaining animals to own. As farm animals, they can be used to produce a variety of products, such as milk, cheese, and yogurt, meat, wool, and body products such as soap and therapeutic skin creams. Whether you are interested in goats for their leather, dairy products, or for filling your fridge, your choice and management of available breeds can make the difference between your goats making or costing you money. No matter which type of goat you are considering keeping, knowing the tricks of the trade will allow you to make the most out of your goats without losing your shirt in the process.
Apart from being delicious, goat meat is a high-protein healthy red meat full of vitamins and minerals. Not only is it a great source of protein, but goat meat is also full of Vitamins B12, C, E, A, and K, as well as iron, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, potassium, and sodium. This combination of very high protein, vitamins, and minerals makes goat meat one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. On a global scale, 65% of meat consumed in the world is the goat.
In addition, goats are used purely as subsistence animals by peasant farmers further condemning the status of the goat. Goats are usually kept by small-holder farmers and are frequently found in regions with little resources where other livestock encounter difficulties in surviving. Goats are important to the subsistence and economic development of peasant farmers because they are cheaper to keep than cattle and provide a constant supply of essential food (both meat and milk) and income throughout the year. There are very few farmers that are rearing goats at a commercial level. The selective breeding and feeding regimes that meat animals have had to improve their confirmation and yield have never been applied to goats. The goat carcasses are seen as inferior to those of other meat animals. In effect, goats are the most artistic of all livestock and can be used to adorn our cities in recreational facilities to showcase their beauty. These peri-urban goat farms can potentially add a new angle to urban tourism.
This just goes to show that goats are highly versatile, itโ€™s not just the meat that matters. Goat amusement parks can bring much-needed revenue. In order to increase our national goat herd, a collective effort is required across the whole goat value chain. In fact, no single farmer can produce enough goats to meet either local or export demand. All in all, goats are an opportunity for us to present the best of who we are to the world. Itโ€™s an industry that we can build and prove our famed collective brilliance.

A training program on Artificial Insemination was conducted @ The Goat Trust in Purnia, Bihar to educate A.I workers(aspiring entrepreneurs).
Goat Farming Tips:
Don't start your goat business with one goat. Plan on getting at least two goats. Normally if you have enough funds get ten goats. Goats are social animals and are more likely to be uncooperative or try to escape if kept alone. Always keep at least two goats in each enclosure. Don't keep uncastrated males (bucks) with females (does) in the same enclosure all the time except for a planned breeding purpose.
Goat farmers need some basic system of record keeping. Your system should be able to give you the following information:
๐Ÿ‘‰The exact number of goats that you have (broken down into different age categories)
๐Ÿ‘‰The dates when your ewes give birth and the number of kids born
๐Ÿ‘‰The number of goats that die (and the age when they die and the cause of death)
๐Ÿ‘‰The exact goats that have been treated (for what and with what)
๐Ÿ‘‰Who is the mother of any particular kid is
๐Ÿ‘‰When a particular ram was brought into the herd
๐Ÿ‘‰The age of any particular goat (the year it was born)
๐Ÿ‘‰The number of goats sold, the time when sold, and prices obtained.
Abortions and stillborn kids are usually caused by an infection like toxoplasmosis, brucellosis, chlamydiosis, or leptospirosis. Kids may also be born weak and die shortly after birth as a result of these infections. Infections are often a result of poor farm hygiene or poor biosecurity. Does younger than 3 years of age and older than 9 years of age abort more often? Chlamydiosis is the most common form of infectious abortion in goats. It is passed to other animals in the fluids and membranes from aborted fetuses or the vaginal discharge from an infected doe. Older Does that have been exposed to chlamydia are immune, but young Does can become infected and abort. In a flock that has not been exposed to chlamydia before, older Does can also have high abortion rates.
