Blue Cubs Find Warmth in Winter Football

On a cold Kolkata morning, when breath hangs briefly in the air and the city moves a shade slower, two football grounds came alive with youthful urgency. At Vivekananda Udyan in central Kolkata and the Oriental Seminary School Ground in the north, the eleventh matchday of the Gostha Paul Champions Blue Cubs League unfolded with a reminder that winter rarely dulls footballing passion in this city.
Organised by the Central Calcutta Gosto Pal Memorial Sporting Club and conducted under the approval of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), the league has steadily grown into a significant platform for grassroots football. On this day, it was not just about results, but about rhythm, instinct and the early shaping of footballing habits among the youngest aspirants.
The Under-10 matches at Vivekananda Udyan offered a blend of raw enthusiasm and emerging discipline. Ichapur Shivaji Sangha Football Academy set the tone with a confident win, while Jhorhat Athletic Club underlined its growing cohesion with a composed performance. There were moments of chaos and control in equal measure—tight contests, late goals and draws that felt earned rather than settled. For many of the players, these were early lessons in game management as much as skill expression.
Across the city at Oriental Seminary School Ground, the Under-12 fixtures took on a different character. The football was bolder, the passing quicker, and the scorelines heavier. High-scoring encounters reflected an attacking instinct encouraged rather than restrained. Gostha Paul Football School’s emphatic win stood out, as did the resilience shown in closely fought draws that kept the sidelines engaged till the final whistle.
Parents wrapped in shawls, coaches pacing touchlines, and volunteers ensuring smooth transitions between matches formed the quiet backdrop to the action. It was a scene familiar yet reassuring—of a football culture sustained not by spectacle, but by continuity.
As the league prepares to move to Kashiyabagan Football Ground, Park Circus, on January 10, the Blue Cubs League continues to reaffirm its purpose. In nurturing competition at the most formative levels, it keeps alive a tradition that Kolkata football has long cherished: that the future is built patiently, one cold morning at a time.
