Living with a Bhutanese Family – A Lesson in Simplicity

Our stay in a humble home at URA, has been nothing short of beautiful. Our host,Sherring , who lost her husband two years ago, stands as a quiet symbol of strength and resilience. She now runs a small homestay and supports herself through farming. Life here is simple, yet deeply fulfilling.

The home was warm—not just because of the bukhari (wood stove), but because of the kindness in the air. No fancy dining tables—meals, always prepared with love, are shared on the floor or small stools.

URA itself is peaceful, clean, and deeply rooted in tradition. People greet you with a gentle bow, and there’s a quiet reverence for their beloved King and his vision of happiness.

As we roamed around in the village, we met several kind-hearted mothers. Though strangers, they welcomed us like family. One elderly lady simply took us straight to her home and gave us a chance to enjoy traditional butter tea and cookies.

Bhutan is already teaching us so much—about gratitude, community, and the many forms happiness can take. This journey isn’t just about travel; it’s about learning how people live with balance and joy.

Carrying goodwill of everyone from Delhi, we first halted at Lucknow, where we had the honour of meeting the Hon’ble Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Anandiben Patel. She graciously wished us success for our onward journey.

We then made our way to Darbhanga in Bihar followed by a meaningful halt in Siliguri. A heartfelt thanks to the Siliguri Institute of Technology for hosting an interactive session with their faculty and parents. We had some thought-provoking conversations about motherhood and the changing family system.

From there, we made our way into Bhutan via the welcoming town of Phuentsholing, opening the door to a brand new chapter in our adventure.
